Why do we watch romance films

People like to watch romance movies because ....

People watch romance movies for escapism as it offers them the chance to escape from reality and feel as if they are part of the movie. Romance movies also make some people emotional so that they watch the movie to feel emotional. People also watch the movies as they want to relate to the things that happen in the movie and they also want to imagine that something like that could happen to them.

Certification of Love Drug

Using the British Board of Classification criteria we have decided to give our film a 15, this means nobody younger than 15 can see this film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 can rent or buy a 15 rated VHS, DVD, Blu-ray Disc, UMD or game. We have gone through the criteria on the BBFC site and feel that this is best suited to our film

The following is the Criteria for a 15

Discrimination

The work as a whole must not endorse discriminatory language or behaviour.

Drugs

Drug taking may be shown but the film as a whole must not promote or encourage drug misuse. The misuse of easily accessible and highly dangerous substances (for example, aerosols or solvents) is unlikely to be acceptable.

Horror

Strong threat and menace are permitted unless sadistic or sexualised.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied. Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’). The strongest  terms (for example, ‘cunt’) may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable.

Nudity

Nudity may be allowed in a sexual context but without strong detail. There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational context.

Sex

Sexual activity may be portrayed without strong detail. There may be strong verbal references to sexual behaviour, but the strongest references are unlikely  to be acceptable unless justified by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme

No theme is prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Violence

Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.

We have given our film this classification because from the Imitable behaviour section as in our film we show some scenes of dangerous behaviour but through the BBFC criteria we will not dwell on this scene as it could be copied.

The name for our film!!

After our questionnaire results didn't give us an answer of what to name our film, we then went on to conduct more market research it the name of our film. We took some of the popular names from the questionnaire but also came up with some new names. Here are the results from our market research

Love Drug           12
Forgetting you      3
Love passing        4
Number 23          1

The outcome was that the title of our film is Love Drug

BBFC!

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), originally British Board of Film Censors, is a non-governmental organisation, funded by the film industry and responsible for the national classification of films within the United Kingdom. It has a statutory requirement to classify videos, DVDs and some video games under the Video Recordings Act 2010. The BBFC rates theatrically-released films, and rated videos and video games that forfeited exemption from the Video Recordings Act 1984, which was discovered in August 2009 to be unenforceable until the act was re-enacted as the Video Recordings Act 2010.[3] Legally, local authorities have the power to decide under what circumstances films are shown in cinemas, but they nearly always choose to follow the advice of the BBFC.

Suitable for all
It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.
If a work is particularly suitable for a pre-school child to view alone, this will be indicated in the Consumer Advice.

PG Parental Guidance
General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.
12/ 12a Suitable for 12 years and over
Exactly the same criteria are used to classify works at ‘12A’ and ‘12’. These categories are awarded where the material is suitable, in general, only for those aged 12 and over. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them.
The ‘12A’ category exists only for cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult, and films classified ‘12A’ are not recommended for a child below 12. An adult may take a younger child if, in their judgement, the film is suitable for that particular child. In such circumstances, responsibility for allowing a child under 12 to view lies with the accompanying adult.
The ‘12’ category exists only for video works. No one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video work.
15 Suitable only for 15 years or over
No-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 15 may rent or buy a ‘15’ rated video work.
18 Suitable only for adults
No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema. No-one younger than 18 may rent or buy an ‘18’ rated video work
R18 To be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops, and to adults of not less than 18 years.
The ‘R18’ category is a special and legally restricted classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and video works may be supplied to adults only in licensed sex shops. ‘R18’ videos may not be supplied by mail order.

When the British Board of Classification give a film a certification that certification only apply to the U.K as in other countries the classification may be different this is because other countries have different values and believes for instance a film could be given a 15 in the U.K and in a different country may be an 18 because they have stricter rules.

Applying to our narrative ....

Equilibrium - Everything is normal in Chloe's life she has the "perfect life" she has all her friends her boyfriend and the perfect grades

Disruption - Slowly everything starts to slip from underneath her, with her fathers death, the distance of her best friend and her now ex boyfriend.

Reconciliation - When Chloe comes  to terms with everything, it all appears to be so much and with no one to talk to. There is only one way to fix everything through drugs

Attempt to repair - James the male best friend finds Chloe and rescues her.

Equilibrium - Chloe now released that James is who she is meant to be with, together they try to make her life perfect again

Todorov’s Theory of Narrative

Todorov suggested that conventional narratives are structured in five stages:
1. a state of equilibrium at the outset;
2. a disruption of the equilibrium by some action;
3. a recognition that there has been a disruption;
4. an attempt to repair the disruption;
5. a reinstatement of the equilibrium
This type of narrative structure is very familiar to us and can be applied to many

Questionnaire Analysis

As a group we collectively got together to analyse are finding from the questionnaire as this will help to create my web page and poster as well as helping the group to create our Teaser trailer....

Question 1). Most of the respondents were females as normal romance films target females we did ask a small majority of males to see if they would be interested in watching a romance films and to see if we could change anything to interest them.

Question 2). The main audience that we asked were between 15 - 20 as that is our target audience but we asked a small majority to fill in the questionnaire to see what they thought about the teaser trailer

Question 3). The majority answered as comedy being their favourite genre of film with romance coming in second, after a meeting we have chosen to do a romance movie as we do not feel that we would be able to create a comedy and we feel a romance would show our skills to the best of our ability.

Question 4). The answer that came out the most was that people go to the cinema once a month which means that people will be very specific to what they watch and the trailer will have to be powerful to gain a large audience.

Question 5). The audience answered mainly that they would like to watch the film after watching the synopsis which enables us to further our studies into our film and to start creating our story board.

Question 6). Although there were some suggestions to change to plot line was to add some action into the film we have chosen not to do this as we are limited with the facilities that we can use and we feel it would make the teaser trailer unrealistic.

Question 7). The expected things from a romance film trailer is a distribution and a happy but predictable ending.

Question 8). The colours that people associate with romance movies are Red, White Pink and Black which red co notates Passion and love as contrasted with the white which is a neutral colour and pink is also associated with love and black co notates danger and death which sometimes takes a part in romance film to make the audience feel emotion.

Question9). The majority stated that the did not visit film websites so our group will have to find a way to get people drawn to my website

Question 10). The main responses were that going on film websites did not interest them

Question 11). People stated that they would like Trailer,Galleries, Cast, About the film and Games on the films website

Question 12). People haven't found anything interesting that we can use because they haven't been on websites because they didn't know they exist we need to advertise more. We plan on doing this by making sure the URL of the website is on the trailer making it a dominant features so that people can watch the trailer.

Question 13).The audience stated that it didn't matter if a large production company or a independent company. Which has helped us come to the decision that we would like to come to the conclusion that we are going to use a independent company as if gives us a chance to widen are opportunities while filming as films produced by large companies follow a stereo typical conventions. Also the genre of film means that we don't have to have a large budget which would mean that an independent company would be able to afford it as there are no special effects are needed and that it doesn't matter if there are not as well known actors because the audience concentrate on the story line instead of the characters.

Question 14). People want to be made cry through a romance movie, as they want to have a emotional response

Question 15). The main place that people see film trailers is the cinema and TV  which would mean that we would have to get our film trailer on T/V and shown in the cinema.

Question 16).People do not look at reviews of the film before watching a film

Question 17). The main technique to get people to watch a film is through the trailer so many techniques are need to be used to attract the audience.

Question 18).Everyone gave different answers on our name choices so more research is needed to come to a final decision on our film name.

Production companies logos :D

A production company is a company responsible for physical production of new media, performing arts, film, radio or a television program. The company may also be directly responsible for the raising of funding for the production or may accomplish this through an intermediary. The production company may be a small company, selling its product to a film studio or presenting it at a theatrical venue, or, in the case of film and television, it may be the studio itself.

I have analysed independent and large companies as i felt this would give me a more round choice for what we need to base are Institution on and it will also help us to design are logo...

Synopsis changed ...

Everything in Chloe’s life is perfect; she has the perfect best friend, the perfect boyfriend and the perfect grades. Life’s going exactly how she had always imagined it to. Now that everything’s falling to plan, and everybody including her is turning 18, Chloe can’t wait to live life to the full. However, things don’t quite go her way.

Slowly Chloe’s perfect world starts to crumble; maybe her best friend Fran and boyfriend Daniel aren’t so perfect after all. What used to be one hour phone calls every night between Fran and Chloe soon changed to 10 minute calls once a week. Why was she acting so weird? Did it have something to do with Daniel and why he’s pressuring her into their ‘first time’? Chloe’s broken relationship with her mum has left her coming to terms with the death of her father all alone.

All Chloe has to do is find a solution to all of her problems, get things back on track so she can have her fairytale ending and be the perfect Chloe she once was. Will her best friend and boyfriend issues be fixed or will her desperation and despair leave her contemplating suicide?

We have changed the synopsis taking into account the audience research and adding more drama but still not giving away to much from the actual story. The story is about a troubled teen who had a prefect life but then her life starts to crumble before her eyes. We have chosen this as a lot of the audience will be able to relate to some of the things in the film and some being the same age they will be at some of the same stages in their life. As some of the target audience will be turning 18 and the excitement that they feel will be shown in the film and that teenagers go through tough times with their friends and many of them can fall out with friends so they will sympathies with the girl as they know how she is feeling.

Current Synopsis .....

Remember me synopsis

"A romantic drama set in New York City during the summer of 2001, where Tyler, a rebellious young man, meets Ally through a twist of fate. Her spirit helps him heal after a family tragedy, though soon the circumstances that brought them together threaten to tear them apart. "

This synopsis is short and it doesn't give to much away which is good because people will want to watch the film to find out. Also it has the main features in the fact that there is a male and a female who fall in love.

"ALONG CAME POLLY"

Reuben Feffer thinks he's found the love of his life but on his honeymoon he discovers her cheating on him with a scuba instructor. Reuben travels back home to get his life on track. On a night out with best pal, Sandy Lyle, Reuben discovers an old school friend, Polly Prince. Reuben feels a connection straight away, and tries constantly to get her to like her. But it's not going to be easy for Reuben, especially when he spends his days calculating risks, and when someone unexpected turns up.

This synopsis shows the big actors in the film which attracts some people that like the actors, also it gives some of the plot away but not to much so the audience still want to watch the film.

Core Audience ....

My core buyer for the romance teaser trailer is teenagers and young adults this is because most of them will be able to relate to the film. The film will be aimed at just females aged between 16 to 20 as they will be going through some of the same things as our main character. They have a interest in movies and watching them and would like to watch more films further. They will be from a working to middle class background and because the majority will be students they will have a limited budget and will have less money to spend of luxury items such as going to the cinema.

Questionnaire ..

We formed this questionnaire to find out what are target audience would want from a romance teaser trailer, we have also constructed it to see what the audience would like from our individual website. We will take this information and use it in the production of our teaser trailer and our websites. By conducting this questionnaire we will be able to keep in mind what our audience want.

Remember me....

This teaser has a voice over running throughout the teaser trailer which helps to direct the trailer and to make sure the audience feel involed in the trailer and that they will then want to watch the movie. The edit used on the second shot shows a blured image this links to being on the train as it shows the fast moving it could also be setting the scene for a fast moving movie. It could also link into the feeling of the main charater into that he is mixed and isn't clear on what he is doing.
